Re-reading your notes is the most popular way to study and one of the least effective. It feels productive (the words are familiar, nothing trips you up) and that fluency is exactly the trap. Recognizing a sentence is not the same as being able to produce it. On the exam, in the meeting, in the moment you need it, nobody hands you the note to recognize. You have to pull it out of your head cold.
So the whole game of studying from notes is this: close the notes and try to retrieve what's in them. Struggling to remember is not a sign you're failing to study. It is the studying.
Why active recall beats re-reading
Every time you successfully drag a fact out of memory, you make that memory easier to reach next time. Re-reading skips the drag entirely, so it barely moves anything. This is why the Cornell method reserves a whole column for questions instead of more notes, and why the "recite" step is the heart of SQ3R. Both are just active recall wearing a layout.
The other half is timing. One recall session helps; the same sessions spaced out over days help far more, because each one catches the memory just as it's about to fade. That's spaced repetition, and it's the single most evidence-backed thing you can do against the forgetting curve. Four short sessions across a week beat one long cram the night before: same total minutes, wildly different retention.
A study loop that actually works
- Read a section once, then cover it. Not the whole set: one heading's worth.
- Say or write the answer from memory. Out loud, or on a blank page. If you can't, you just found the exact gap re-reading would have hidden.
- Check, then fix the note. Uncover, correct what you missed, and rewrite that point in your own words. The rephrasing is where understanding forms.
- Come back tomorrow, then in a few days. Space the repeats; drop the ones you nail, keep drilling the ones you fumble.
Turn your notes into questions
The fastest way to make notes recall-ready is to phrase them as questions you have to answer, not statements you can nod at.

Every heading becomes a question. Studying is then just answering your own quiz until the fumbles stop. The deeper mechanics (retrieval, spacing, attention) live in memory and focus.
Where an app helps (and where a deck is better)
For raw memorization (vocabulary, anatomy, formulas), a dedicated flashcard app with a scheduling algorithm (Anki is the classic) is still the sharpest tool, and no notes app replaces it.
