School note-taking works because someone checks. College removes the check, and the feedback arrives once, at the exam, twelve weeks after the mistake. That gap is the whole problem, and almost every college note-taking failure traces back to it.
The volume is also different. Three to five courses, each with lectures, assigned reading, seminars, and a reading list you cannot possibly finish. Techniques that work for one class collapse under that load. What follows is built for the load.
Decide the format before the lecture, once per course
Do not decide in the room. Each course has a shape, and it does not change much across the semester.

Pick in week one, then stop thinking about it. The decision cost of choosing mid-lecture is exactly what makes people fall behind, and the whole diagnosis is in how to take notes fast.
Problem-based courses are the exception to everything on this page. Nobody passes a maths exam by having good lecture notes. Your notes are a record of worked examples, and the study method is doing problems without looking. Copy the worked example, then redo it blind the same evening and mark where you got stuck. That mark is the note.
The 24-hour pass, which is the entire technique
If you change one thing, change this. Within a day of every lecture, spend ten minutes on the notes:
- Fill the gaps you left and expand the shorthand that no longer parses.
- Write down three questions the lecture answered. In question form, not keywords.
- Write two lines at the top saying what the lecture was actually about.
Ten minutes per lecture, roughly an hour a week per course. It converts a pile of paper into something you can study from, and the questions become your revision material for the rest of the semester.
The reason this specific timing works is the forgetting curve: the steepest loss happens in the first day, and a short retrieval-based review inside that window resets it far more cheaply than rereading everything in week eleven.
Do not read everything you are assigned
You are given more reading than there are hours. Pretending otherwise is why students read nothing rather than reading selectively.
Triage the list every week:
- Read properly what the course is built on. Usually two or three items.
- Skim strategically the rest: abstract, introduction, conclusion, section headings, and any table. For most papers that is 80% of the argument in 15% of the time. The SQ3R method is the formal version.
- Skip openly, and note that you skipped. A one-line placeholder saying what you skipped and why is better than a silent hole you rediscover during revision.
When you do read properly, take notes in your own words as you go rather than highlighting. Highlighting was rated low utility in Dunlosky's review, and it fails for the same reason rereading does: it feels like learning and produces nothing you have to generate yourself. Stop rereading, start testing
Karpicke and colleagues asked students how they study. Rereading was by far the most commonly reported strategy, and self-testing was rare, mostly used to check learning rather than to produce it. That is close to backwards.
Retrieval is the study method that works. Cover the notes, answer the questions you wrote in the 24-hour pass, and check. What you got wrong is your revision list, and it is much shorter than the syllabus.
Rereading feels better because fluent text feels like knowledge, which is the illusion of competence and the reason so many people are surprised by their own exam results. The practical machinery is in active recall and spaced repetition.
Organize as little as possible
A folder per course, files named by date and topic. That is a sufficient system for a semester, and most of what students do beyond it is procrastination with a productivity flavour.
Two things genuinely repay effort:
- One running document per course, or one index note, where the three-line summaries accumulate. By finals you have the whole semester in ten pages, in your own words. This is the single most valuable artefact of the year.
- A place for the questions you could not answer. Anything you did not understand, unresolved. Take it to office hours. This is the most underused resource in higher education, and turning up with three specific questions is what makes it work.

Laptop or paper
Both work. Handwriting is slower, which pushes you to select and reword rather than transcribe, and that selection is where the benefit is. Typing is faster, searchable, and backed up, which matters over three years of accumulated material.
The variable that actually predicts outcome is not the device, it is whether you transcribe. A laptop user writing in their own words beats a handwriter copying slides. The semester rhythm, in short
- Before class: skim the reading, know the topic, have the page set up.
- In class: capture claims, not sentences. Mark what you did not follow.
- Within a day: the ten-minute pass. Questions and a summary.
- Weekly: answer last week's questions from memory. Collect what you got wrong.
- Monthly: reread nothing. Test on the collected wrong answers.
That is roughly two hours a week per course outside class, and it replaces the week of panic that would otherwise arrive in December.
