In a history seminar or a philosophy lecture, there is no equation to copy down. There's an argument. And the standard response — bullet whatever the lecturer says, in order — produces three pages that record the words of an argument while losing its shape.
The Q/E/C method, popularized by Cal Newport in How to Become a Straight-A Student, fixes that by recording only the skeleton:
- Question — the problem being addressed.
- Evidence — the material offered in support.
- Conclusion — where the argument lands.
That's the whole method. Every idea in the session becomes one Q/E/C triple.
What it looks like
Q: Why did the Weimar Republic's stabilization after 1924 fail to survive 1929? E: — Recovery financed by short-term American loans E: — Coalition governments dependent on parties opposed to the republic E: — Agricultural depression predates the crash by three years C: The stabilization was real but externally funded; the Depression removed the funding, not the legitimacy.
Compare that to the same lecture bulleted verbatim. The bullets contain more words and less argument. The triple is already a study object — cover the C, read the Q and E, and try to reconstruct the answer. That's active recall built into the note's structure, which is exactly what a good note should do for you later.
Why the order is backwards in practice
Newport's most useful practical point is that you rarely hear the question first. A lecturer starts talking, you don't yet know where it's going, and by the time you understand the question, three pieces of evidence have already gone past.
So write evidence as it arrives, leave a gap above it, and fill in the Q when it becomes obvious. Add the C when the argument closes. Then spend five to ten minutes after the session tidying the triples while the material is fresh — the single highest-return habit attached to this method, and one that doubles as a review pass.

The line is clean: if the content is a claim someone is defending, use Q/E/C. If it's a procedure or a structure, don't. For technical subjects Newport himself recommends working the problems rather than taking prose notes at all.
The trade-off nobody mentions
Q/E/C is slower in the moment than transcribing, because it asks you to understand the argument while it's still being made. Sessions where you're already lost become harder, not easier — you can't extract a question from material you don't follow yet.
That's not a flaw so much as a diagnostic. If you can't find the question, you've discovered a gap you'd otherwise have papered over with tidy bullets. Read ahead next time, or capture loosely with the sentence method and impose Q/E/C afterwards.
It's also the method's strength. Effortful encoding is what makes notes stick — the whole why writing helps memory argument — and Q/E/C is difficulty pointed at the right thing: the logic, not the letters.
How it relates to everything else
Q/E/C is a capture format, not a filing system. It sits comfortably underneath any of them: each triple is small and self-contained enough to become an atomic note, and a stack of triples is the natural raw material for literature notes in a Zettelkasten workflow.
