Sketchnoting
Sketchnoting is a way of taking notes that mixes handwriting with simple drawings, arrows, boxes, and hand-lettered headings. Instead of a wall of text, you end up with a single page that shows the shape of an idea. The method was popularized by designer Mike Rohde in The Sketchnote Handbook, and his core promise is worth repeating up front: sketchnoting is about capturing ideas, not making art. You do not need to be able to draw.
What sketchnoting actually is
A sketchnote is one integrated page built from a small set of visual parts. There is handwriting for the words that matter. There are containers, like boxes and circles, that group related thoughts. There are connectors, mostly arrows and lines, that show how one idea leads to another. There are simple icons, a lightbulb, a clock, a dollar sign, that stand in for concepts you would otherwise spell out. And there is typography, meaning you write key phrases larger or bolder so the eye knows what is important.
The point is not decoration. The point is that laying ideas out in space, rather than in a top-to-bottom list, lets you see relationships. This makes sketchnoting a close cousin of the visual approaches covered in the mapping method, and it sits alongside other options in the note-taking methods library.
The visual vocabulary
You can start with a deliberately tiny toolkit. Rohde argues that almost everything can be drawn from five basic building blocks: a dot, a line, a circle, a square, and a triangle. From those you can make arrows, boxes, speech bubbles, simple faces, stick people, and rough icons. That is the whole vocabulary. As his site What are Sketchnotes? puts it, the work is listening, catching the big ideas, and making them stick, not producing a gallery piece.
Because the vocabulary is so small, the barrier is lower than people fear. A messy lightbulb still reads as an idea. A rough arrow still reads as a cause. Legibility to you, later, is the only standard that matters.
Why it helps memory
Sketchnoting has a real cognitive basis in dual coding, which comes from Allan Paivio's dual-coding theory. The idea is that your mind stores information through two separate channels, one verbal and one visual, and that pairing a word with an image lays down two memory traces instead of one. Two independent retrieval cues make the memory easier to find later.

How to start
Keep it low-stakes. Use one pen so you are not tempted to fuss. Listen for a full thought before you write anything, then capture only the headline. Give the page a title, and let a rough structure emerge as you go rather than planning it. Build a personal library of a few icons you can draw fast. Speed and confidence come with repetition, not talent.
When it works, and when it does not
Sketchnoting shines when the material is conceptual and you want the big picture: talks, keynotes, podcasts, book chapters, brainstorming, and synthesizing an idea after the fact. In those settings the visual layout is the whole benefit.
Be honest about the limits, though. Sketchnoting is slow, and it is poor for fast verbatim capture, so it struggles in a rapid-fire lecture where you cannot afford to fall behind.
