Folgezettel: Luhmann's Branching Note Numbers

Open the Luhmann archive and the first thing you notice is not the writing. It is the numbers. Notes carry addresses like 21/3d7a6, and no two are alike.

Those addresses are the Folgezettel system, and it is the single most argued-about detail in the whole Zettelkasten method. Some people consider it the load-bearing element. Others consider it a paper workaround that digital tools made obsolete. Both camps are partly right, and the disagreement is more interesting than either position.

What the numbering actually is

A Folgezettel is a follow-up note: a note placed immediately behind another one because it continues its line of thought.

The numbering encodes that placement, and it encodes nothing else. It is an address, not a category.

  • Write a note on a fresh topic, it becomes 21.
  • Write something that continues 21, it becomes 22 if that slot is free.
  • Slot taken? The continuation of 21 becomes 21a, and it physically sits between 21 and 22.
  • A continuation of 21a becomes 21b. A branch off 21a becomes 21a1.

Alternating numbers and letters, forever. Every note gets a permanent address the moment it is filed, and it never moves again.

The critical property: 21a is not a subcategory of 21. It is simply the note Luhmann wrote next while thinking about 21, and it sits behind it in the drawer. The tree is a record of the order thoughts arrived, not a taxonomy of what they are about.

Why do it at all

Three jobs, and they are worth separating because digital tools solved them at different speeds.

A permanent, unique address. Once a note is 21a, it stays 21a. That makes it safely linkable from anywhere else in the box, which is what allows a web of references to exist on paper at all. Without stable addresses there is no linking, and without linking there is no slip-box.

Physical adjacency as a form of memory. Pull out 21a and you are holding 21, 21b, and 21a1 too. The neighbours arrive whether or not you remembered they existed. This is the part people underrate: the box surfaces context you did not ask for, which is where unexpected connections come from.

Growth without a plan. You never have to decide where a note belongs, because it belongs behind whatever you were just thinking about. There is no category to choose and therefore no category system to outgrow, which is the failure mode that eventually kills every folder hierarchy. The same instinct is why tags versus folders is a live argument thirty years later.

The argument against

The case for skipping it is straightforward.

Digital links are better at the first job. A wiki link points exactly where you mean, in both directions, with no address arithmetic. Backlinks give you the reverse view for free, which paper cannot do at all.

The branching gets awkward. Long sequences produce IDs like 21/3d7a6, and readers of the archive have argued at length about how Luhmann handled cases where the obvious next slot was already taken. The scheme was not as clean in practice as its description suggests, and reconstructing his exact rules is an ongoing hobby for a small and dedicated group.

It encodes an order you may not want. The address permanently records where a note happened to be written. If your thinking reorganises, the numbers do not, and you are left navigating the archaeology of an old mental model.

It is real overhead. Filing a paper note took Luhmann seconds because he had thirty years of practice. Filing a digital note under a Folgezettel scheme takes deliberate effort, and effort at capture time is exactly where note systems die. See PKM mistakes for the general version of that failure.

What to actually do digitally

The honest answer is that you should keep one of the three jobs and drop the other two.

Keep the permanent identifier. Give every note a stable ID, and use a timestamp rather than a branching number: 202607290914. It is unique, it never collides, it never needs arithmetic, and it survives retitling. Most Zettelkasten-oriented apps do this by default. The point is that the title should be free to change while the address stays fixed, which is why how to name notes treats those as two separate problems.

Drop the branching arithmetic. Links do that job better. 21a says "written after 21"; a link says "this argument depends on that one", which is more information in fewer characters.

Replace adjacency deliberately. This is the one thing you genuinely lose, and it is the reason the argument persists. On paper, neighbours arrive uninvited. Digitally, nothing arrives unless you fetched it.

The two workable substitutes:

  • Maps of content. A hand-made index note listing a sequence in the order you want it read. This is the closest digital equivalent to a drawer of Folgezettel, and unlike the numbering it can be reordered when your thinking changes.
  • The graph view. Weaker, because it shows connection without sequence, but it does surface neighbours you had forgotten. See knowledge graph.

The part that actually mattered

It is easy to spend a month on numbering schemes and produce no notes. That is the real risk here, and it is the reason to be suspicious of how much attention this topic gets.

Luhmann's box worked because of what was written on the slips: single ideas, in his own words, connected to specific other ideas, accumulated for decades. The numbering was the filing mechanism a paper system required in order to do that. It was infrastructure, not the method.

If you write atomic notes in your own words, link them to the specific notes they argue with, and revisit them often enough to notice patterns, you have the system. Whether your addresses branch or count is a detail, and one that Luhmann himself would probably have found an odd thing to litigate.
