Draw a quick arrow diagram of a process you just read about, and you will remember it longer than if you had only read the sentence. That is dual coding in one move: your brain files the same idea twice (once as words, once as a picture), so recall has two roads back instead of one. Block one road and the other still gets you there.
The idea comes from psychologist Allan Paivio in the 1970s. His claim was specific and worth stating precisely, because it is easy to overreach: verbal information and visual information are processed in separate but connected channels. Give a concept a representation in both, and you build a redundant memory that is sturdier than either channel alone.
What dual coding is, and isn't
It is not "visual learners learn from pictures." The learning-styles idea (that each person has one channel that works for them) has not held up in research. Dual coding says the opposite and is better supported: everyone benefits from pairing words with a relevant visual, regardless of any supposed style.
It is also not decoration. A picture that merely looks nice next to the text (a stock photo, a random icon) adds nothing and can distract. The visual has to carry meaning the words also carry: a diagram of the relationship, a timeline of the sequence, a sketch of the structure.
Why it works, briefly
Two independent traces are harder to lose than one. This is the same logic behind spaced repetition and beating the forgetting curve (more retrieval routes, more durable memory), but dual coding builds the redundancy at the moment you take the note, not later through review. The act of turning a paragraph into a diagram is also generative: you have to understand the relationships well enough to draw them, and that effort is itself what makes it stick.

The two structured methods that lean hardest on this are the mapping method, which turns a topic into a branching picture, and the charting method, which uses a grid so the columns themselves encode the comparison. Both are worth reaching for when the relationships matter more than the sentences.
A lighter habit that scales: after capturing a note in words, add one small visual (an arrow, a bracket, a two-box diagram) that says the same thing spatially. It takes ten seconds and doubles the ways you will later find your way back in.
Where it backfires
- Fast linear input. During a lecture at speaking pace, stop and sketch and you fall behind. Capture in words now; add the visual when you review.
- Redundant visuals. If the picture just restates the words with no added structure, it is clutter. Cut it.
- Split attention. A diagram on one page and its explanation three pages away forces your eyes to shuttle back and forth, which costs memory. Keep the words and the visual together.
The honest limit for a phone
