Most of what feels like good studying is a comfortable lie. Re-reading a chapter, highlighting the important lines, watching the material flow by a second time: it all feels like learning because it feels easy, and we read easy as mastery. Robert Bjork spent a career showing the opposite. The conditions that make study feel slow and error-prone in the moment are often the ones that make the memory last. He called them desirable difficulties.
The word doing the work is desirable. Not all difficulty helps. Confusing instructions, a broken tool, or drilling something you never understood is just friction, and friction like that only wastes effort. A desirable difficulty is a specific kind of struggle: one that forces your brain to do the encoding and retrieving that builds durable memory, rather than letting it coast on familiarity.

Why the strain is the point
Bjork's explanation rests on a simple distinction: a memory has storage strength (how well it's learned) and retrieval strength (how easily it comes to mind right now). The two come apart. Cramming pumps retrieval strength sky-high for a day, which is why the material feels solid the night before, and why it's gone by the following week. Storage strength, the kind that lasts, grows most when retrieval is effortful, when you have to reach for something that isn't sitting on the surface.
This is the same engine behind the forgetting curve: letting a memory fade a little before you pull it back is what flattens the curve over time. Effort now buys retention later. Comfort now borrows against it.
Building the right friction into notes
You wouldn't drill flashcards of your own meeting notes, but the principle still changes how a notes habit should work. The trap is treating a note as a place you stored an idea and never return to. Storage without retrieval is exactly the easy path Bjork warns against.
- Retrieve before you re-open. Before pulling up a project note, try to say what it contained. The miss is where the learning happens.
- Space your reviews. A note revisited a week later, then a month later, sticks in a way that one long filing session never will. This is spaced repetition applied to your own thinking.
- Write in your own words. A note you rephrased is a note you generated, and generation beats transcription.
The honest caveat: difficulty is only desirable when the material is within reach. Struggling to retrieve something you never encoded just cements a blank. Understand first, then make recall hard.
