A mnemonic is any trick that makes arbitrary information easier to hold. It works by one of a few moves: turning a raw list into a word, hanging facts on a structure you already know, or wrapping a dull fact in a vivid image. The common thread is that your memory grips meaning, order, and pictures far better than it grips random strings. Mnemonics exploit that on purpose.

The evidence is real, and uneven
Some of these are backed by strong research. The method of loci is the best evidenced: a 2017 training study found six weeks of practice more than doubled recall and reshaped brain networks toward those of memory champions, with gains lasting months. The keyword method has held up since Atkinson and Raugh's 1975 Russian vocabulary study, where learners who used a keyword remembered more words weeks later. Chunking is a basic, reliable feature of how short-term memory works.
Others, like acronyms and rhymes, are less studied but obviously useful for short fixed lists. The point is not that every trick is equal. The point is that a few of them genuinely move retention when the task is memorizing.
Where mnemonics stop being useful
Be honest about the limits, because this is where people waste effort.
Mnemonics do not build understanding. An acronym for the cranial nerves tells you the order of the words, not what the nerves do. If you memorize a chain and skip the meaning, you can recite and still not think. Real comprehension comes from work like the Feynman technique or active recall, not from a clever image.
They also cost effort to build. A good keyword or a well-stocked memory palace takes real construction time. That investment pays off for a fixed, high-value set you must carry in your head. It is wasted on information that changes often or that you could simply look up.

Draw the line: head vs. notes
The useful question is not "how do I memorize this," it is "does this belong in my head at all."

Most things do not. Reference facts, dates, quotes, project details, anything you can look up in a second belong in external memory, not in a memory palace.
