Close the book and try to say what you just read. That small, slightly uncomfortable act of pulling the answer out of your own head does more for memory than reading the page a second, third, or fourth time. Psychologists call it the testing effect (or retrieval practice), and it's one of the most robust findings in the science of learning: the act of retrieving a memory is what strengthens it, more than restudying the same material ever does.
This is deeply counterintuitive, which is why almost everyone gets studying wrong. Re-reading feels productive. The words are familiar, they flow, and that fluency reads as knowing. Retrieval and spacing are a pair
The testing effect answers how to review; spaced repetition answers when. Retrieve too soon and it's trivially easy; too late and it's a cold miss. Space your self-tests so each one lands just before you'd forget, and the two effects compound.
