The Spacing Effect: Why Spread-Out Study Beats Cramming

Study a fact for one hour tonight, and you'll know less of it next week than if you'd studied it for twenty minutes on three separate days. Same total time, dramatically different result. That gap is the spacing effect, and it's one of the most reliably replicated findings in the science of learning. Hermann Ebbinghaus first noticed it in the 1880s, and more than a century of experiments has confirmed it since.

Why spacing works

Two things happen when you leave a gap between study sessions.

You force effortful retrieval. Right after a session, everything is fresh and re-reading feels easy, which is exactly the problem. A day later, the memory has faded a little, so pulling it back takes effort. That effort is the signal that strengthens it. Cramming skips the fade, so it skips the strengthening.

You reset a shallower forgetting curve. Each retrieval flattens the forgetting curve: memory fades slower after every well-timed review. Space your sessions and each one lands while the curve is still dropping, resetting it flatter each time. Stack them back-to-back and you reset a curve that's barely moved: wasted repetitions.
