The Generation Effect: Why Producing Beats Reading

Given the pair rapid–F___T, you fill in the blank and the word sticks. Handed rapid–FAST, you read it and forget it. Same word, same second of your attention, but producing it yourself lays down a stronger memory than reading it does. Psychologists named this the generation effect, and it's one of the most reliable findings in the study of learning.

The classic demonstration goes back to 1978: people who generated a target word from a cue remembered far more of them later than people who simply read the finished pairs. It's been replicated across words, sentences, math, and images for decades. The size varies; the direction almost never does.

Why producing works when reading doesn't
