You sit down to read. Four paragraphs later you notice your eyes have been moving and nothing has gone in, and you have been thinking about an email instead.
That is mind wandering, and the useful thing to know about it is the scale. Killingsworth and Gilbert sampled thousands of people at random moments through the day and found that people were thinking about something other than what they were doing roughly 47% of the time. Not during boring tasks specifically. Across everything.
Half your waking life is spent somewhere else. Any plan for focus that assumes otherwise is a plan for a person who does not exist.
The unhappiness finding
The study's second result is the one that gave it the title. People reported being less happy when their minds were wandering, and this held even when the wandering was toward pleasant topics. The topic mattered less than the fact of being elsewhere.
The time-lagged analysis pointed in one direction: mind wandering tended to precede lower mood rather than follow it. That is suggestive rather than conclusive, but it inverts the intuitive story. We assume we drift because we are bored or unhappy. At least some of the time, the drifting comes first.
It is not a malfunction
Worth saying clearly, because the productivity framing gets this wrong. A wandering mind is doing something.
Unfocused thought is where planning happens, where you rehearse a difficult conversation, where a problem you set down three days ago quietly resolves itself. The shower insight is a real phenomenon and it does not arrive during concentrated effort. Deliberately unfocused time is a genuine input to creative work, not a leak in the system, and it is why how to brainstorm works better with gaps in it.
So the goal is not elimination. It is choosing when. Wandering during a walk is the good version. Wandering during the fourth reread of the same paragraph is the expensive version.
Why it costs so much during work
Two mechanisms, both compounding.
You lose the thread, not just the seconds. Coming back to a task means rebuilding the context you had loaded: where you were, what you had decided, what came next. That rebuild is the real expense, and it is why a two-minute drift can cost fifteen minutes of effective work. The same arithmetic drives context switching and attention residue.
Reading keeps running without you. This is the specific danger for studying. Motor reading continues after comprehension stops, so you can finish a page with no memory of it and a mild sense of having read it. That is the illusion of competence in its purest form, and it is why passive reading is such an unreliable way to learn anything.
What actually reduces it
Catch and return, without commentary. The skill is not preventing the drift, it is shortening it. Notice, name it, go back to the sentence. Irritation at yourself is a second departure from the task, and it lasts longer than the first one.
Write down the intruder. Most drift is a loop demanding attention: an unsent message, an unmade decision, a thing you must not forget. Writing it down closes the loop cheaply enough that the mind stops raising it, which is the Zeigarnik effect working in your favour. A single capture line is the entire intervention, and it is the strongest argument for the capture habit being a focus tool rather than an organisation tool.
Make the task require output. Wandering thrives where nothing is being produced. Reading with a pen, answering questions as you go, summarising each section from memory: all of these make drift immediately detectable, because the output stops. This is active recall doing double duty as an attention monitor.
Shorten the block. Attention degrades with time on task, and a 25-minute block you finish present beats a 90-minute block you spend half-absent. That is the real argument for the Pomodoro technique, and it has nothing to do with tomatoes.
Remove the cheap escapes. A phone within reach converts every micro-drift into a full departure. The wandering was going to happen either way; what a visible phone changes is how long it lasts.
Fix the boring ones. Chronic drift on a specific task usually means the task is badly sized, badly defined, or genuinely pointless. That is information about the task, not a character flaw. Reading a chapter with no question in mind produces drift because there is nothing to hold onto; the fix is SQ3R or any method that gives you something to look for.
The part where notes help
A notes system is, among other things, a device for making your attention cheaper to lose.
If everything is held in your head, every interruption threatens something, so your mind keeps checking. If the plan, the open questions, and the half-formed thoughts are written down, a drift costs you a few seconds of rereading rather than a reconstruction from nothing. This is the practical case for external memory: not that it makes you smarter, but that it lowers the penalty for being a normal human with a 47% problem.
The habit that makes the most difference is unglamorous. Before you stop, write the next line. Leave a note saying where you were and what comes next, so that returning is reading instead of remembering. Interstitial journaling formalises this into a running log of transitions, and it works largely because of this one property.
The honest expectation
You are not going to get the 47% much below the 47%. Meditation training moves it somewhat, practice moves it somewhat, and neither produces a mind that stays put.
What is genuinely available is a shorter round trip, a cheaper re-entry, and better placement: drift on the walk, not on the page. That is a smaller promise than most focus advice makes, and it is the one that survives contact with an actual Tuesday.
