These two get compared as if they were the same kind of product. They are not. Quizlet is a study tool with flashcards in it. Anki is a scheduling algorithm with a card editor attached.
That difference decides everything else, including which one you should use.

The real difference: what happens on day 12
Both apps show you cards. The question is which cards, and when.
Anki is built on the finding that spacing your reviews beats cramming them, even when the total study time is identical. Cepeda and colleagues' synthesis of nearly 300 experiments found a consistent advantage for distributed practice, with the optimal gap growing as the delay before the test grows. Anki implements this seriously: every card you rate is rescheduled based on how well you knew it, so the material you find hard comes back tomorrow and the material you know cold disappears for four months.
Over a two-year course, that difference compounds enormously. You end up reviewing a few hundred cards a day out of a collection of twenty thousand, and retaining nearly all of it.
Quizlet's study modes shuffle and repeat, and its adaptive mode does adjust, but the scheduling is neither transparent nor tunable, and its centre of gravity is the study session rather than the multi-year curve. It is designed for the week before a test.
If your horizon is Friday's quiz, that is fine, and Quizlet will get you there faster. If your horizon is the licensing exam in eighteen months, the scheduler is the whole product and Anki wins outright.
Where Quizlet is genuinely better
Being fair to it, the advantages are real:
- You will actually start. Type terms, study immediately. Anki's setup includes deck options, note types, and a scheduler with parameters, and plenty of people quit there.
- The shared library is enormous. For standard vocabulary and common courses, someone has already made the set.
- The study modes are varied. Match, Test, Learn. Variety helps people who find flat card review unbearable, which is not a trivial consideration when adherence is the binding constraint.
- It works well in classrooms. Teacher-created sets, live games, group play. Anki has no answer here.
- Nothing to maintain. Anki collections need occasional care, and a badly built deck actively wastes your time.
Where Anki is uncatchable
- The scheduler. FSRS, now built in, fits the intervals to your own review history rather than a fixed formula. You set a target retention and it works out the timing. Nothing else consumer-facing is close.
- Cloze deletion and image occlusion. Hiding one word in a sentence, or one label on a diagram, is the difference between recognising and recalling. For anatomy, pathology, and anything with diagrams, image occlusion is the reason medical students use Anki almost universally.
- It is free and it is yours. Open source, local database, real export. Your cards will still exist if the company does not.
- It scales. Ten thousand cards is normal. Quizlet becomes unwieldy well before that.
- Total control. Daily limits, lapse handling, custom card templates, add-ons for almost everything.
The iOS app costs a one-off fee, which funds development of everything else. Given the price of the alternatives, it is hard to object to, and the Android and desktop apps remain free.
Choose Quizlet if…
You are studying for something in the next few weeks, you want to start in the next five minutes, someone has already made the set you need, or you are a teacher who needs the class to play along. Also if you have tried Anki twice and bounced, because the flashcard app you use beats the better one you do not.
Choose Anki if…
You are learning a language, in medical or law school, or preparing for any exam more than a couple of months out. Also if you want to build a body of knowledge that stays with you after the exam, which is the case Quizlet is simply not designed for.
Budget an hour to learn it, use FSRS with default settings, and do not touch the other options until you have a reason.
The mistake both apps let you make
Neither tool saves you from bad cards, and bad cards are the usual cause of failure.
A card with a paragraph on the back is not a flashcard, it is a page you will fail to recall and rate as hard forever. One fact per card, phrased as a question that has a single specific answer. This is the atomic notes principle applied to review.
The other mistake is downloading a 5,000-card shared deck and grinding through someone else's phrasing. Cards you wrote work better, because writing the card is itself an act of understanding. That is the generation effect, and it is why the slow route often finishes first.
What neither of them does
Flashcards are for facts with answers. They are excellent at vocabulary, definitions, mechanisms, and drug doses, and poor at ideas that connect to other ideas.
For the second kind, you want notes that link rather than cards that test, which is the domain of evergreen notes and the Zettelkasten method. Most serious students run both: a note system for understanding, a card system for retention. They answer different questions and neither replaces the other.
